'name the bias' scribbled in a handwritten font.

People with ethnically diverse names have to send 60% more applications to get a job interview.

Let that sit with you for a bit… The fact is, there is an alarming lack of workplace equity for ethnic minority workers in the UK, and the above statistic is only scratching the surface of the issue.

On Ethnicity Pay Gap Day, January 8, it’s time to call out workplace biases people of colour face when it comes to career opportunities. Because bias isn’t just a barrier; it’s an invisible tax on talent and it’s stunting careers before they can even start.

It’s time to #NameTheBias

What’s in a name?

Yasmin Ali

Typed version below.

The poem, handwritten.

What’s in a name?
An age?
A place?
The first main way you can speculate on someone’s race,
their face,
their faith.
It becomes a statement
Did you know that as it alludes to our heritage?
It can affect our pay despite our occupation.

The same wage,
same rate,
same pay
as another person.
But the only difference between what we’re worth and what they’re earning is based on the names given to you or me.
So your name implies the place you came from is worth more pay than the person with a name you say wrong.

And still, you say our names wrong,
Say we don’t belong,
determine our pay on whether our names sound easy enough to say,
A name can imply you’re paid less even though you’re able.
So we’re paid less p to the pound for sitting at the same table.
See my name is an expression and requires acceptance.

It’s not a way to profess that I should be considered less within the same profession.

A name shouldn’t divide us to people like us or decide if people like us

In my name is my ancestry.
A long line of familiarity.
It’s my family tree.
My name is a gift to me.
In my name is my legacy.
So if I present myself for more,

My name should not be the reason why you dismiss me,
Why you make assumptions of my Capabilities why you limit me stop me from thriving and deny me opportunities
Ironically it’s these industries that suffer when you close these doors.

My name might mean I’m paid less but I know
I’m worth more.
